What is the DAISY Award? The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses recognizes and honors nurses or Nurse-led teams who demonstrate truly exceptional caring and compassion to each patient and family, every moment, every day.

DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. The DAISY Foundation was established in 2000 by the Barnes Family in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP) at the age of 33. The DAISY Foundation is dedicated to funding research to help eliminate diseases attacking the immune system, and to supporting ITP patients and their families. Having been touched by the remarkable care, clinical skills and compassion demonstrated by nurses during Patrick's illness, the Barnes family made it their mission to recognize exceptional nurses around the country.

A Virginia Mason Franciscan Health DAISY Nurse or Nurse-led Team:

Demonstrates caring and compassion for a patient and family in a way that goes above and beyond to make them feel comfortable, safe and cared for.
Creates a supportive environment that is individualized to the patient and family needs.
Offers a hope-filled attitude and maintains belief in the patient and family’s abilities to care for oneself and each other.

How to nominate a Virginia Mason Franciscan Health Nurse or Nurse-led Team: Anyone can nominate a nurse or nurse-led team for the DAISY Award: patients, family members, team members and others.

Eligible nurses are: any registered nurse involved in direct patient care (hospital and clinic nurses, Assistant Nurse Managers, Clinical Nurse Leaders, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Nurse Practitioners, for example).
Eligible teams are: any registered nurse-led direct patient care team.
